Firstmate Wins Minnesota Turf Distaff

Barry and Joni Butzow's Firstmate kicked off July 2020 in fine fashion with a stakes win at Canterbury Park in the Minnesota Turf Distaff. The 5-year-old chestnut mare by Midshipman out of a Lion Heart mare, Lion Cub, bested a field of seven in the 7 1/2 furlong race for fillies and mares, 3 years old and upward which are registered Minnesota breds. Trained by Valerie Lund, Firstmate was sent to SST for freshening.

On the same day at Canterbury Park, another SST graduate, Madisonian, won a maiden special weight for owners Joshua and Madison Madison. The 3-year-old filly by Old Topper out of Via Di Roma (Northern Afleet), is trained by Bruce Riecken. She was also sent to SST for freshening.

Kactus Kate, who was foaled and raised at Silver Springs Stud, also won a maiden special weight on July 1 - at Emerald Downs. The 2-year-old filly is by Tourist out of Desert Liasion, by Woodman, and is owned by Jack Hodge's Oak Crest Farm LLC. She ran 4 1/2 furlongs on the dirt in 52.82 seconds for trainer David Martinez.

And on July 5, at Los Alamitos, Silver Springs-started Chico Baby won an allowance race for owner Grant Paulson. The 4-year-old gelding is trained by Brian Pitnick.
